Amnesty International’s condolences for the terrible loss of Zaman Mehsud

| November 6, 2015

Dear HRCP Friends,

On behalf of my colleagues at Amnesty International,  I would like to extend our deepest condolences for the loss of your colleague Zaman Mehsud and to express our solidarity in this tragic moment! We knew Zaman Mehsud through his work in South Waziristian, he has been a devoted human rights defender. We were very saddened and shocked to hear about the killing of  Zaman and to see HRCP losing another one of its brave and devoted activists. Amnesty International condemn such attacks in strongest terms.

We do appreciate the extremely hard circumstances human rights defenders and journalists are working in, especially in the Tribal Areas, often braving death threats and intimidation for the cause of human rights, and we greatly value HRCP’s work and sacrifice.

Amnesty International issued a public statement yesterday following the Taliban claim of responsibility for the killing of Zaman. We called on the Pakistan authorities to conduct a prompt and independent investigation and ensure justice, as well as access to reparations for Zaman’s family.

From my conversation with one of Zaman’s journalist colleagues, I understand that HRCP has provided some financial aid to Zaman’s family, but please let us know what are the needs of the family and we will look into some options to see how we can help.

Also would be helpful if you could tell us what actions, if any, the government and other concerned authorities are doing in response to the Zaman’s killing.

We wish strength to Zaman’s colleagues and family to overcome this difficult time.

May Zaman’s soul rest in peace.

In solidarity,
Pakistan Team
