\u2018She defined courage\u2019: HRCP pays tribute to Asma Jahangir

\nLahore, 11 February 2021<\/i>. At a reference held at the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) earlier today, rights activists gathered to pay tribute to HRCP\u2019s co-founder and iconic human rights defender, Asma Jahangir.<\/p>\n

Veteran journalist and former secretary-general I. A. Rehman said that Ms Jahangir \u2018defined courage.\u2019 She did not shy away from the possible consequences of a principled action or stance, he added. When sections of civil society termed General Pervez Musharraf\u2019s seemingly liberal military regime a \u2018window of opportunity\u2019 for human rights in 1999, recalled Mr Rehman, Ms Jahangir was quick to retort, \u2018But there is no need to take a flying leap straight through that window.\u2019<\/p>\n

Labour rights activist Farooq Tariq recalled that Asma Jahangir was always ready to take part in demonstrations for workers\u2019 rights at short notice and had played an instrumental role in helping mobilise the Anjuman-e-Mazareen Punjab in Okara against military-owned farms. Civil society activist Mohmmad Tahseen said that it was important to take Ms Jahangir\u2019s vision forward rather than dwell on her loss.<\/p>\n

Lawyer Alia Malik, who worked with Ms Jahangir for over 25 years at the AGHS Legal Aid Cell, said that she had always encouraged her younger associates to remain persistent: if the courts refused to listen to them, Ms Jahangir would say, then they should return with stronger evidence and ask on what basis the courts had refused to listen.<\/p>\n

Former chairperson Dr Mehdi Hasan recalled that, when a young Christian accused of blasphemy was shot dead outside the Lahore High Court, his last words had been: \u2018Tell Asma Jahangir what has happened.\u2019 Indeed, her name was synonymous with the human rights she spent her life defending.<\/p>\n

Chairperson Hina Jilani remembered Ms Jahangir as a \u2018doer.\u2019 \u2018It was the late Iqbal Haider\u2019s idea to set up a commission for human rights, but it was Asma who made it happen,\u2019 she said, adding that it now fell to activists all over Pakistan to continue the work Ms Jahangir had spearheaded. \u2018We are being silenced and our right to mobilise against human rights violations is being taken away,\u2019 she declared, adding, \u2018We have lost many friends and allies along the way, but as human rights defenders, we cannot afford the luxury of cynicism or frustration.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Asma Jahangir Memorial Lecture, instituted by HRCP last year, will be held on 16 February 2021 in Islamabad. This year\u2019s lecture will be given by Senator Raza Rabbani, who will speak on freedom of association and student activism.<\/p>\n
