CPAP is a human rights group based in<u><\/u><u><\/u>Karachi<u><\/u><u><\/u> which campaigns for human rights and religious freedom. Their blog reports on human rights violations committed by security forces and religious extremists in <u><\/u><u><\/u>Pakistan<u><\/u><u><\/u>. Samar Abbas also worked in <u><\/u><u><\/u>Karachi<u><\/u><u><\/u> with various internet forums that report on the oppression and atrocities committed against <u><\/u><u><\/u>Pakistan<u><\/u><u><\/u>\u2019s ethnic and religious minority groups.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>On <u><\/u>14 January 2017<u><\/u>, Samar Abbas\u2019 family registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Ramna Police station in <u><\/u><u><\/u>Islamabad<u><\/u><u><\/u>. The family reported that when they were last in contact with Samar Abbas he was located in Sector G-11 of <u><\/u><u><\/u>Islamabad<u><\/u><u><\/u>. The police are now investigating the disappearance of the human rights defender.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>On <u><\/u>7 January 2017<u><\/u>, Samar Abbas was travelling from <u><\/u><u><\/u>Karachi<u><\/u><u><\/u> to <u><\/u><u><\/u>Islamabad<u><\/u><u><\/u> for business. The family said that he was in continuous communication with them until <u><\/u>7 January 2017<u><\/u>when his mobile phone was switched off. The family have not heard from him since.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The disappearance of Samar Abbas is the fifth disappearance of a human rights defender in <u><\/u><u><\/u>Pakistan<u><\/u><u><\/u> in just over a week. On<u><\/u>7 January 2017<u><\/u>, Ahmed Raza Naseer was taken from his family\u2019s shop in <u><\/u>Punjab<u><\/u> province by unidentified men. On <u><\/u>6 January 2017<u><\/u>, Salman Haider disappeared from <u><\/u><u><\/u>Islamabad<u><\/u><u><\/u>. On <u><\/u>4 January 2017<u><\/u>, Waqas Goraya and\u00a0 Asim Saeed were reported missing from <u><\/u><u><\/u>Wapda<u><\/u> <u><\/u>Town<u><\/u><u><\/u>, <u><\/u><u><\/u>Lahore<u><\/u><u><\/u>.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Human rights defenders in <u><\/u><u><\/u>Pakistan<u><\/u><u><\/u> are facing an increasingly hostile climate. In August 2016, the Pakistani government enacted a cybercrimes law which is being used to hamper digital freedom of expression. Under this law, the government is able to censor online content, criminalize internet user activity, and access internet users\u2019 data without judicial review.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Front Line Defenders expresses grave concern at the disappearance of human rights defender Samar Abbas, which it believes was solely motivated by his peaceful and legitimate work in human rights in <u><\/u><u><\/u>Pakistan<u><\/u><u><\/u>.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><b>Front Line Defenders urges the authorities in <\/b><u><\/u><u><\/u><b>Pakistan<\/b><u><\/u><u><\/u><b> to:<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Carry out an immediate, thorough and impartial investigation into the disappearance of human rights defender Samar Abbas, with a view to ensuring his protection and release, publishing the results and bringing those responsible to justice in accordance with international standards;<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Guarantee in all circumstances that all human rights defenders in <u><\/u><u><\/u>Pakistan<u><\/u><u><\/u> are able to carry out their legitimate human rights activities without fear of reprisals and free of all restrictions.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Carry out
