{"id":6532,"date":"2017-01-05T11:37:22","date_gmt":"2017-01-05T11:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hrcp-web.org\/hrcpweb\/?p=6532"},"modified":"2021-12-15T11:38:24","modified_gmt":"2021-12-15T11:38:24","slug":"lahore-closure-denied-peoples-right-to-use-thoroughfares-hrcp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrcp-web.org\/hrcpweb\/lahore-closure-denied-peoples-right-to-use-thoroughfares-hrcp\/","title":{"rendered":"Lahore closure denied people\u2019s right to use thoroughfares: HRCP"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff;background-position: center center;background-repeat: no-repeat;border-width: 0px 0px 0px 0px;border-color:#eae9e9;border-style:solid;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start\" style=\"width:104% !important;max-width:104% !important;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_4_5 4_5 fusion-flex-column\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p><strong><span data-term=\"goog_621075831\">January 5, 2017<\/span><\/strong>: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has voiced grave concern over the cavalier manner of the authorities in closing down Lahore <span data-term=\"goog_621075832\">on Wednesday<\/span>, apparently to prevent a protest.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued <span data-term=\"goog_621075833\">on Thursday<\/span>, the Commission said: \u201cHRCP is shocked by the manner in which the government chose to practically shut down the city in an attempt to regulate a protest in the provincial capital <span data-term=\"goog_621075834\">on Wednesday<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHRCP has never been happy with the government\u2019s method of crowd management and has repeatedly called for Pakistan to benefit from well known recommendations, by experts working with the United Nations among others, on dealing with protests without resorting to excessive or disproportionate use of force or denying people the freedom of movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile agitation or protests are regulated the world over, that is not done through shutting down the traffic for an entire city. As the people spent up to three hours stuck in traffic, they had neither been informed about the reasons for the closure of the city\u2019s main arteries by placing shipping containers, nor about any alternative routes. It appears that no effort was made to minimize road users\u2019 suffering. Neither was any attention paid to the loss of so many working hours on a weekday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHRCP must stress that the use of thoroughfares is a right that must not be denied to the people.
