Lahore, March 14:<\/strong>\u00a0Condemning OPP director Parveen Rehman\u2019s brutal assassination in the strongest possible terms, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called u<\/p>\n

pon all Pakistani citizens who care for freedom, justice and human rights to stand up against\u00a0 their enemies that are out to destroy their symbols of hope. In a statement issued here today, the commission said:<\/p>\n

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal killing of Parveen Rehman, Director of the Orangi Pilot Project, one of the most committed and courageous defenders of the cause of the poor and the disadvantaged this country has had.\u00a0 For 30 years she worked against all odds and hazards, ignoring the threats to her life as she travelled daily through\u00a0Karachi\u2019s killing fields to extend succour to vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n

Proving herself an able successor to the inimitable Akhtar Hameed Khan, she guided the Orangi Pilot Project in retaining its position as a pioneering institution in the areas of urban development, rural planning, water and sewerage management, poor children\u2019s education and a genuine micro-credit service. Her assassination is a cruel blow to the country\u2019s civil society and a great loss to the nation.<\/p>\n

HRCP offers sincere condolences to the bereaved family and the OPP team and affirms its view that it is not enough to shed tears over wanton killing of the best of\u00a0Pakistan\u2019s sons and daughters.\u00a0 All those who care for freedom, justice and human rights must stand up together and resist the monsters that are out to destroy their symbols of hope and love.<\/p>\n
